PRELIMINARY TASK:
One of the first tasks that I needed to do in media was the Preliminary Task. In the preliminary task I was asked to pick people within my class so that I could make a production team of 4 and our task was to make a radio show, containing the following: the interview with a special guest (Ed Sheeran) that is related to the topic that we came up with, which is music, and with the duration of the radio show must be 30-40 seconds. Moreover, our group had to create a name that we will call to our radio show which was " Tune FM", with the theme of music.
Who is in my group and their roles:
-Alberto Santos Pinto: the presenter of the show
- Eduardo: the special guest and music editor
- Jason Hall and I: editor of voice and placing the show together (Editors)
Secondly, the group had to make a script that accentuated the codes and convention of the radio show and accentuated what the presenter and guest would say to one another. Furthermore, the group had to take into consideration on what type of jingle would we playing at the intro and outro of the radio show. Eduardo took it into his own hands and used an application in Apple called 'Garange Band', the codes and convention of the radio show developed up to its genre of being a music radio, which included: Chatty presenter, no dead air, interview, time(optional).
The screenshot on the left is the illustrations of out old and first script that as a group came up with when we were planning the radio. The script on the left is not 100% excellent as some the lines were a bit long which makes the editing process a bit time to consume and difficult.
The image on the left is the direct improvement of the old script. We made this improvement because we needed to include the variety of codes and conventions that create the genre of radio news.
Furthermore, we had to improve our old script because when want to make it attractive and eye-catching by including some names of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We decided to put this in because we want a way to communicate with our audience whenever they want to ask a question.
Furthermore, the group had to begin recording the newly created script, after it being finalised by the group. The image below signifies the group recording the beginning stages of the radio show, with Alberto using Audacity to say his first line. The group had to make sure that when recording, there are no any unwanted noises that could affect the overall quality of the recording.
Whilst working with Jason Hall, I learned about labelling tracks. This was important because it is only labelling a track. But, this labelling made it exceptionally easier for use to edit to overview the track since it tells us what track was being edited and made it efficient for the placing of other audio and musical pieces, creating a better visual and accurate editing.
Below, is a video of the planning process of how we conducted our own radio show:
Who is in my group and their roles:
-Alberto Santos Pinto: the presenter of the show
- Eduardo: the special guest and music editor
- Jason Hall and I: editor of voice and placing the show together (Editors)
Firstly, the whole group came to a discussion about who is the target audience of the radio show would be and consider review which option (in our opinion) would be straightforward. We came to a conclusion to pick the target audience of music enthusiasts, therefore the main guest of the radio of show would be a musical sensation, who is well-known in the music industry and community. After the discussion, it was decided that the guest would be Ed Sheeran, this is because is a very influential singer recognised for his amazing talents and song writing. Afterwards, the group then had to decide what the radio show's name would be, which was decided to be called as 'Tune FM', as it creates a more exact with the context of the show, as music.

the draft checklist that the group looked over when creating the show |
There are two type of scripts, one being the initial draft that was used to record since it appeared to be more pleasant and efficient. Although, when further analysing the several questions we have to answer, it was decided to re-write and re-record certain parts of the script because we wanted to fit more codes and conventions, which build the radio show and address the audience more.

New Script |
Furthermore, we had to improve our old script because when want to make it attractive and eye-catching by including some names of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We decided to put this in because we want a way to communicate with our audience whenever they want to ask a question.
This was needed because firstly, it gives an outline of the different aspects of the show and where the show begins and ends. This is important to me as an editor due to the fact that it helps focus on what sequences my must follow to what my colleagues suggested. Secondly, we used colour coding to identify which section of the flow chart, therefore, we don't get confused on what sequence we put in order. Furthermore, the flow chart helps me understand when I will put the jingle and the background on the radio show, additionally, my group said to make the jingle quieter so that they can hear the background music. Finally, the order, the flow chart helps me, as the editor, to organise the radio show in an orderly fashioned way.
Furthermore, the group had to begin recording the newly created script, after it being finalised by the group. Afterwards, Jason Hall and I had to edit the voice and audio making to guarantee it was in order and at the right pitch and volume, (therefore I had to use the Amplify tool and how to use it, since I'm a rookie at editing.) the reason why we used amplify is because it will allow us to manipulate certain parts of the audio, whether the voices had to be amplified or either lower the volume of the voices or increase the volume of the audio that was too quiet. Furthermore, we to constantly use the shift tool to place the audio in the right sequence, following the structure of the flow chart. On the other hand, Eduardo had to import the jingle and the BGM (Background Music in Garange into an MP3 file, therefore we can start putting it on the radio show.

Final Production of Preliminary Task :
Below shows the final production of my preliminary task, showing the final, edited version of the show:
The video above demonstrates how us a group planned our show. First of all, we talked about what topic we will be focusing on towards the guest of the show and we came of the idea about the name of Ed Sheeran's album and how the album will become sensational. Furthermore, we talked about the back track of the show and what will be using, our group came up with three options that we can use and find suitable and we used the last one because everyone in the group agreed with it. Moving on, as a one the editors of the show, my colleague came up with the idea of fading in and out to activate the music and with the jingle as well for the beginning.
In my group and responsibilities:
Jason Cueto (Me) & Jason hall: Editor
Alberto Santos Pinto- the interviewer of the show
Eduardo De Souza- guest
Research Methods:
Audience Research
Audience Research
Understanding Audience is based on the demographics of a certain area. The general public is one of the concepts of demographics due to the fact that all people have their own opinions about a controversial topic.
There are 8 types of demographics to understand audience:
-Age
-Gender
-Sexual orientation
-Location
-Social class
-ethnicity
-disabilities
-culture
Out of all these 8 categories, I believe social class, ethnicity and location are the most important demographics for to understand my audience. Firstly location, the reason why location is important because it will be easy for me to gather information about where they live, for example, if they live in Liverpool they're more likely to listen to news about Liverpool due to the fact that they're the people who will be affected. Secondly Ethnicity, this is because different times of ethnicity have their own likes and dislikes. This will help understand what their opinion is on certain topics about their local area, news values and what types of news they would like to hear. To further understand my knowledge of understanding audience through demographics. My partner (Alberto Santos Pinto) and I went to Westfield and conducted our own research.
Me and Media:
There are wide-ranging media platforms that other individuals and I apply everyday life that is produced for a diverse target audience. I will discuss the types of media platforms that I predominantly collaborate and the reason why I admire these types of media platform and their features of appeal.
Social Media:
Firstly, social media because this application empowers other individuals and to exchange words with one another via texting. This feature of social media is the main centre of appeal for all kinds of audiences since many people can type the way they speak in order to emphasise a particular to the sender and understand how they feel. The best example is the acronym "LOL" (Laughing Out Loud). Furthermore, social media is free of charge, in gist the person can communicate with other individuals without having to think about paying, expanding the appeal of audiences towards social media. The most frequent social media app that I use is Facebook!
Facebook. One of my favourite apps of all time! Facebook is the only source I have to communicate with my all of my friends such as going out as a group or mainly talking to one another in order to get the best of our day. Facebook is very important to me as it holds all of my precious memories in the past 8 years. Whenever I feel disjointed or lonely, I simply look back at those joyful years and tell myself that if you can't be a good person today, be a better person tomorrow.Without Facebook, my life would be filled with boredom and not be able to connect with the people I care about is as terrifying like cancer.
![]() |
Example of a social media platform that I use. |
The image above draws to an attention about how I was able to manipulate the app by sharing with friends and family about my personal life and my feelings to a given topic, whether its a picture or a video. This interests me because I' am able to illustrate other pictures and videos that may share the same emotions I feel about it. Moreover, back in 2010, that was the year I felt that Facebook really lit joy to me because I was able to play niche type of games such as Ninja Saga, because of this it links to idea of audience as Homoludens (humans who love to play video games) or gamers, since people adore playing video games and experiencing playing with other players.
Video Games:
The most appealing Media platform to me is video game platform because it is something I can do to escape the reality and enter the virtual world in which I have the free will to control my own virtual life. My PlayStation 4 is my only source of gaming entertainment and with exhilarating games that I have like NBA2K 16, Warframe and Watch Dogs, it is simply best!
Secondly, talking about Video game platforms it has been one of the most popular trend for youth in our generation, which makes me very interested in why so. The number one reason to that is video games gives players the most intense and difficult task that they to achieve in order to progress in the game, as a result players are rewarded with special items to their avatars in which enhances their own play style and become more powerful. Elements like these in games creates more value and excitement to game making players very interested and attracted to experience it on their own. To me, this is also the reason why I love games that have this component in a game because it makes want to play for hour and hours trying to become the best player in the game. People think that video game will be the death of you or sit down looking at a pixelated screen is boring but ultimately video gaming is a passion for many gamers!
GᖇᗩᖴᖴITI
Media has become very important to me because it allows me to socialise with multiple people and be able to create a friendly bond with one another. But when we talk about Graffiti in Media, instantly I think of 'a picture with a thousand meaning', which is all graffiti nowadays because they want to use the power of arts to convey their message to the public about how they feel about something that damages the image of society and the best example for this has to be Facebook. The picture above contains millions of messages. Let's break it down, shall we? Firstly, I can load of Facebook logo, immediately this tells that the main topic is about Facebook and its negative effect on a person. As we can see, the person have these two blockers on his head with a Facebook logo on it and a 'Like' sign hanging in front the person. immediately, this tells me that Facebook makes people obsessed because all they want in their status about liking. Explicit messages like these are what makes me keen person about the idea of graffiti. Some people suggest that it is damaging the lovely environment of the community but it has a deeper and valuable message that we need to take into account in order to be better people.
These kinds of ideas are what exercises my mind to become confident and analytical because, as sixth form student I need to be able to express what I'm thinking about and be confident with myself as confidence is the biggest issue with me I guess. examining and analysing these types of a masterpiece is definitely worth my attention because these talented artist knows how to be confident about their own individual work and express how they truly feel.
Primary research: INTERVIEWING (QUALITATIVE)
On the 29th of October 2016, my partner and I conducted our own primary research which is the use of interviewing to understand the significant news value is relevant in my specific area. The focus of the question is to find out the relevant events and the impact. The interview is an example of Qualitative due to the fact of its depth analysis on a certain topic. For our interview we decided to go to Westfield, we decided to go here is a wide-ranging of audiences, gender, age and opinions about their specific area that they live in and what they think could be improved in the area they live in.
Here is the evidence for our Interviewing:
1) How well do you know your area?
2) What do you like about your area?
3) What kind of news would you like to know about your area?
4) What do like to improve about your area?
And here is their response:
the first interviewee we sought was one a staff member of a clothing shop in Westfield. From the interview, the woman suggests that she knows her local area and she reveals in her answer that she suggest "cheaper transport and more news relating to cultural events..."
the second interviewee we asked was a random bystander in Westfield. From the interviewee, the man is also keen to know more about his local area and from his vivid description, he seems to enjoy living there. Although, he didn't seem to know how his local area could be improved, which would suggest that he is simply satisfied with his local areas' current status.
the third interviewee was a staff member of H&M. From the interview, it was heavily noticeable that she is an active member of her community and seems to enjoy her local area. However, she ain her answer, she also said that there were too many people living in her local area and news proximity were ideal rather than usual controversial or detested figures in the world.
the final interviewee was an another staff clerk of Top show. From the interview, he explains that he doesn't know much about his area and he just recently moved to London from America, but he did say that he likes the comfort of his local are by doing leisure activities. Furthermore, he also added in his answer that heavy traffic was an issue within his local area, hence he wanted to make improvements about the issue and also he wants news based around on historical contents.
Secondary research: RAJAR (quantitative)
Evidence of using RAJAR as research :
RAJAR is a website that operates a single audience measurement system for the UK radio industry supporting both the BBC and licensed commercial stations. The company is jointly owned by the BBC and by the RadioCentre showing the vast majority of commercial radio stations across the UK. RAJAR measures the audience in specific areas and categories what percentage of people in these areas listen to certain radio stations.
According to the Rajar website, the Share in TSA % for both Capital Fm Manchester (5.6%) and BBC Manchester (5.7%). As emphasised BBC Manchester has 5.7%, which suggest that
I went to Westfield and conducted our own research.
With the help of RAJAR, we were able to design our own questions to help our understanding about what their thoughts about news and their local area. The question that we used for our interviewing is in the primary research section of my blogger.

For my research method, I used the Primary research method to help understand what events are significant in my chosen area. Furthermore, I used the Primary Research method to understand what age of range and also the type of target audience I would like to have. As a result to this, this will give me an effective understanding of what would be considered as news.
Understanding the Genre features of a local radio news broadcast
In my next task, I had to record a local radio news in a certain area in the UK which can be found on the BBC radio website and must begin at 6:00 pm in which I have to record a 5-6 minute of the radio in audacity. After it finished recording, the local news that I had to find examples of codes and conventions that are recorded local news and place them on my blog. The local I decided to pick was BBC MANCHESTER, which in the UK is located north-west of London

BBC News local radio stations |
CC: CONTINUITY ANNOUNCER
the first code of convention that I was able to identify is the continuity announcer. A continuity announcer is the typical news reporter who distributes the reliable information towards the audience of the radio broadcast, this type of code and convention is very frequent in any news related broadcast. This type of code and convention portrays a very optimistic idea towards the radio broadcast and by progressing to give dependable information to the audience it makes it easier for the audience to consider that the stories are more praiseworthy.
CC: TOP NEWS
the second codes and convention I was able to identify was the Top News. This section of the local radio news broadcast is demonstrated to be one the most vital assets as this is the reason why they would visit the radio news broadcast. additionally, the top news feature is where the audience will mainly be educated or informed about what is currently occurring inside and outside of the country.
CC: WEATHER
the third code and conventions that I was able to notice is the weather, this is the section in which refers to the current and future expectations for the weather in a specific part of the UK or in Manchester. Additionally. this section of the local radio news broadcast will concise over the countries weather, but mainly hub on the weather of the area being broadcast, which Manchester. Furthermore, this feature mainly focuses on informing the audience about the weather situations in their particular area.
CC: JINGLE
the fourth codes and convention that I was able to identify was the jingle, this kind of feature is mainly used at the beginning of the show. This intro music may last between 3 seconds to a minute depending on the radio news broadcast, in my radio example, the jingle lasted 15 seconds. This kind of feature is very vital to a radio news broadcast as it notifies the audience that the radio news broadcast is about to begin. Furthermore, it is also said that for the jingle is to allow the audience to have a quick break before the important news of the say.
CC: RADIO IDENTIFICATION
the fifth code and convention that is well-known in the radio news broadcast us the radio identification, this is section is simply where the presenter of the news is introduced.
CC: INTERVIEW
the sixth codes and conventions are the interview, which is normally inserted in between the top news of the local news broadcast. The main purpose of this feature is to prove that the report given to the audience is real facts, as simply saying the news segment would not approve the local news broadcast completely to some audience members. Therefore, the interview segment enables the audience to presume the local news broadcast more. The interview will definitely be beneficial to my task because the person who is being interviewed suggests the whole emphasis of the local radio news broadcast reiterates that the local radio news broadcast is still going and make the audience believe that the local radio news
Jingle (intro):
the first code and convention that I was able to identify in my commercial bulletin are the Jingle. Equally, to my BBC new bulletin, this specific codes and conventions notify the audience that the radio news broadcast is about to start. This jingle lasts for 8 seconds.
Top News:
the second codes and conventions that I picked out are the Top news of the news bulletin. This code and convention are shown at the start of the broadcast right after the jingle is played. Equally, this specific code and convention are what makes the audience informed about the current situations happening in their area or around the world.
Continuity Announcer:
the fourth code and convention are the weather. Similarly, to the BBC broadcast that I did this section of the news bulletin will briefly talk about the area's weather. This connects to the radio focusing on a certain target audience as the show mainly focuses on informing the audience about the weather situations in their area.
CC: NO DEAD AIR
the final codes and convention that I was able to spot were the no dead air. This simply means that the continuity announcer does not stop speaking for more than 2- 3 seconds. The emphasis's of this particular code and convention is that it creates a dead air that the show is over or has stopped broadcasting for a short moment. The no dead air reiterates that the local radio news broadcast is still going and make the audience believe that the local radio news is still happening and make the audience believe that the broadcast has finished.
Commercial Radio News: Understanding genre

location of Capital FM Manchester |
I was asked to record a live local news bulletin from a commercial radio broadcast. the radio bulletin that I have chosen is Capital Manchester. Capital Manchester is considered known for its music stations, the institution does news bulletins, due to the fact that they need to follow OFCOM licensing, which forces them to broadcast daily news.
Codes and Conventions of commercial radio:
Jingle (intro):
Top News:
Continuity Announcer:
the third codes and convention is was able to spot are the Presenter or Continuity Announcer, which is the section in which the presenter introduces themselves to the audience and to illustrate the authority that they have to announce the news.
Weather:
the fourth code and convention are the weather. Similarly, to the BBC broadcast that I did this section of the news bulletin will briefly talk about the area's weather. This connects to the radio focusing on a certain target audience as the show mainly focuses on informing the audience about the weather situations in their area.
Outro:
the final codes and conventions in the bulletin is the outro, this is shown at the ending of the broadcast and signifies that the broadcast is coming to its end. This code and convention are illustrated by the use of music in the background, which is very identical to the intro jingle of the broadcast, informing the audience that the broadcast is about to end.

As a whole group, we became making consolidation and decided that the script would be re-written since it was very long and include simple points to ensure that the audience understands what is happening in the X-Factor.
The second draft of our script was the final script for news item 1 this is because of many reasons: firstly during the introduction, it said " thank you" which is not required because people can just go to the local news bulletin. Secondly, the introduction about Honey G is irrelevant since citizens of Harrow Road should be already informed about her true identity and former occupation. Furthermore, our co-editor of voice Patricia insisted that we should include a Voxpop, therefore we can get a snapshot of public's opinion about Honey G and so our main interviewer went to Harrow to achieve this. The addition of the Voxpop was the main reason why we had to re-write our script and this also means that we have to erase some verses because if we use all the information on the first draft along with the vox pop (which lasts 12s), it will exceed the maximum duration of one news bulletin.
Hypodermic Needle Explanation:
The Hypodermic Needle or Bullet theory was made in the 1930's by researchers intended in explaining the effects of mass media consumption and propaganda in World War 1. The Nazi parties believed the media was highly influential, and so as one of their most effective methods of gaining support seemingly converted a whole population to supporting Hitler's rule through the use of Radio broadcast. The theory claims that audiences are passive and related that is, each consumer accepts the message presented by the media is blindly accepted regardless of individual differences. it is a closed text communication theory, suggesting that messages flow in a linear fashion from the sender to the receiver, with no interference. There is a drawback to this theory, however, is that it suggests no person possesses differences in opinion at all. There is no room for subjective interpretation and it could be argued that if this theory were true, society would be a group of people with exactly the same beliefs, in contrast, it is obvious that subjective interpretations exist.
Stuart Hall's Encoding and Decoding theory:
the model below is a representation is what a simple message looks like.
![]() |
Diagram of Stuart Hall's theory |
the image above is rather the real concept of Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding of a certain programme or picture for example. Encoding and Decoding model of communication is a model that suggest that TV, pictures or any forms of media audiences are presented with messages that are decoded, or interpreted in wide-ranging ways depending on an individual's cultural background, economic standing, personal experience and frameworks of knowledge. When an audience decodes a message, they are extracting the meaning of that message into terms that they're able to understand.
Decoding of a message is how an audience is able to know and interpret the message. it is a process of interpretation and translation of coded information into a comprehensible structure. The audience is trying to re-establish the idea by giving meaning to symbols and by interpreting the message as a whole.
Stuart Hall argues that there are three positions that people may take upon decoding a television or picture information. He states that three different codes as decoding do not follow inevitably from encoding. Hence, just because a message is encoded on television in a certain way, it does not suggest it will be decoded in its proper format. These codes are Dominant codes, negotiated code and the oppositional code.
1. Dominant Reading:
This code is one where the audience takes the real message directly and decodes it exactly the way it was encoded. For example, political and military superiors mainly create the politics of Northern Ireland and the Chilean Coup. These superiors created the dominant interpretations as these concepts were hegemonic interpretations, they become dominant. Stuart Hall illustrates that if an audience of a news bulletin decoded the message in terms of the reference code in which it has been encoded that the viewer would be operating inside the category of the dominant code.
2. Negotiated Reading:
This code suggests that the audience partially disagrees and broadly accepts the decoded meaning of the news bulletin. The audience sometimes modifies it in a way in which reflects their own positions, experience and personal interest. An example of this is when a viewer/audience enjoys reading a magazine, however, she disagrees with of the messages that the magazine portrays towards the audience.
3. Oppositional Reading:
Lastly, there is the oppositional code. Stuart Hall suggests that the audience or viewer can understand the meaning of a message while decoding a message in a globally contrary way. Meaning that a person understands that their meaning of the message of the audience is unacceptable and, or what was intended, however, changes the message in their mind to fit an "alternative framework of reference".
1. Dominant Reading for Local Radio Bulletin Capital FM:
It is relieving to hear that Britain and the United States are punishing Russia and Syria because it helps the two countries to stop the countries civil war, which is very beneficial as Russia and Syria would be saving their countries economic state and improve the quality of life of their citizens.
2, Negotiated Reading for Local Radio Bulletin Capital FM:
It's good see that Britain and the United States working together to prevent the countries civil war by punishing Russia and Syria, but as a pacifist, I hope their method of punishing does not involve violence to influence Russia and Syria about their aims. Additionally, if Britain and the United States do use violence, more soldiers or casualties will be affected with severe injuries.
3. Oppositional Reading for Local Radio Bulletin Capital FM:
Why is Britain joining forces with the United States? isn't the USA has the most powerful military to lead this against Russia and Syria why is Britain meddling with other countries problems, especially war? If there is a civil war then Britain will only increase the death.
Dominant ideology:
The term dominant ideology, means the attitude, beliefs, values and morals spread out by the majority of the people in a given society; as a purpose of social control, the dominant ideology frames how the majority of the population thinks about the
nature of society, their place in society, and their connection to a social class.
Active vs Passive Audience:
An active audience is one that actively engages with the text. They do not simply accept the media message. They ask questions what they see and develop their own interpretation of a media product based on their life experiences, education, family, and cultural influences. 'Bottom up' theories generally assume an active audience. Theories like "Uses & Gratification" and "Postmodernist theory" assume that audiences are active.
A passive audience does not actively engage with a media text. A passive audience is one that does not question the message that the media is sending and simply accepts the message in the way the media outlet intended. 'Top down' theories of media influence tend to assume that audiences are passive. Theories such as "Bullet/Hypodermic" and "Agenda setting function' assume audiences are passive.
The illusion of "Effect Theory":
The illusory truth effect is the tendency to believe the information to be connected after a repeated amount of exposure This phenomenon was first discovered in 1977 at Villanova University.
The illusory truth effect was a visible impact in the political sphere. By appealing to unconscious biases and belief, politicians are able to form believable claims, regardless of actual validity. Through the repeated amount of exposure, the claims become increasingly believe as the illusory truth effect suggest.
This effect was seen in Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. He made the assertion that Muslims in New Jersey had celebrated the September 11th terrorist attack, and that he had personally seen video footage of the event. By appealing to emotionally and racially charged biases and beliefs, it rapidly became a repeated and believed claim, despite being shown to be false information. However, Donald Trump claims were not true, they were still believed due to the impact of the illusory truth effect.
Understanding 'Local'
When we talk about understanding Local, it is important to understand what the meaning of mass and niche audience. The term "local" dates to a time when communities could only be served by media which originated within them- the local newspaper, TV, or radio. Today, communities continue to have local pride, interest, and concern, but their understanding of expressing and sharing in those things are no longer limited to the media which so happens to be around the corner. Locality is connected to the news in wide-ranging forms, local news can be in a form of a local radio news bulletin, an example of this is IRN which stands for Independence Radio News. IRN owns three massively powerful institutions and they are Bauer, Global Radio and Classic FM. These three institutions distribute news to their own local radio news in which they distributed news.
Cultivation Theory:
the cultivation theory was made in 1976 by George Gerbner, which specialises on the long-term effects of media like television and states that the more time you observe the same thing, the more the individual is likely to follow it, this is because of the frequent amount of the media platforms like the TV, influencing the audience's point of view of reality. an example of this is that if an individual will believe that the world around us is violent and dangerous. This is because of the repeated amount of exposure changing an individual's perspective or point of view of reality.
My Blogger Walkthrough:
the video above is my blog walkthrough.
Production:
1. The duration of the production to be 5 munites long.
2. The local bulletin having a range of news elements.
3. A variety of unique codes and conventions (E.g. Voxpop, interviews etc.)
4. To be in a group of four and give each other specific tasks.
In my Group and the Roles:
The group that I was decided to assign each other different roles to follow that may offer throughout the editing process of the production and follow different news items to maintain the amount of research each person performed.
Panagiotis Karachialos: (panoskarachaliosg321.blogspot.
- follow the role of script-writer and interviewer of the news items
- follow the news items of Crime as OB and interviewer to
Alberto Santos Pinto: (http://albertosantospinto2016.blogspot.co.uk)
- Leading editor of all news items using Audacity.
- follow the news items of weather as OB
Patricia Tiparu: (http://
- follow the role of co-editor of voice and scripting of the whole production piece and was the main presenter of the bulletin throughout.
Catherine O'Neil:
- she follows the role of a sub presenter whenever our leading presenter Patricia is not available during that period of time.
Me:
- I was assigned as the role of editor of the beginning jingle, outro and the whole creation of Background Music of our News Bulletin. This obligated me to use Garage Band so that I can fulfil my duty in the group.
- I was also assigned to as OB of Follow Up.
- My second duty was also to be the leading editor of sound effect. This obligated me to use Freesound.org for our news items such as Crime, Follow up, Travel and Media Agenda.
- Lastly, I was also the researcher of all the news items and ensure that our script writer Panos understands it, therefore he can produce the overall script for Patricia,

Provenance of News Item 1 ENTERTAINMENT |
The image above is where our group got the idea of doing the entertainment news bulletin. As the leading news item researcher, I found the news item through the use of secondary research bu using Harrow Times. This website enabled me to understand the current status of what is happening to Honey G. Additionally, this type of website is clearly targeting a niche audience, because of its relevance to the local rapper- Honey G and the lack of focus on global news.
The reason why Honey G was the very first news item for our local radio bulletin is because we wanted to emphasise on the locality of the news items. Hence, with a bit of secondary research, I was able to gather information about who is this local celebrity Honey

Before we recorded, we needed to ensure that our recording sounds will be suitable and in order to do this, we checked the microphone level to make sure it was always green and it was at least - 12 when recording. This colour indication implies that the voice is suitable. To improve the voice quality and make sure that it is at least 12, we also a voice popper through the recording since it helps to avoid plosive and breathing noises.
Jingle Creation:
![]() |
first step of jingle creation |
For this section, I will discuss on how I composed the jingle for the intro of our local news bulletin. The first step of this composition is finding the right BPM (Beats per minute)
The reason why this was first because I believe that with the correct BPM I would be able to efficiently make a good rythm for the Local News Bulletin. After a long experiment of what BPM was the most suitable, 135 was the one and I did by looking for a simple drum kit set and playing in the track to evaluate its suitability.
![]() |
Second step of jingle creation |
The next part of the jingle composition is the synth. The picture above is what synth I used to help start of the jingle, this specific synth produces a very melodic tune, invoking the listener to feel delighted. Moreover, this specific synth was suitable to create a good build up and link to next part of the jingle.
![]() |
Vocal name sample |
The third part of jingle composition was the use of vocals. The image above is the vocals that I used to piece it together and make a good synergy with the synth. In the vocals, the singer is saying " Get up, Get up, oooohhhaaaa" which invokes the listener to feel engaged.
![]() |
The Drum kit sample |
The fourth part of the composition of the jingle is the use of a drum kit and more specifically the ' Basic Core Beat', the reason for this use is because this sample uses a suitable kick and snare to create a good flow and rhythm.

As a whole group, we became making consolidation and decided that the script would be re-written since it was very long and include simple points to ensure that the audience understands what is happening in the X-Factor.
The second draft of our script was the final script for news item 1 this is because of many reason: firstly during the introduction, it said " thank you" which is not required because people can just go to the local news bulletin.
Voxpop:
We went around the local area of Harrow Road to gather information about their opinion on their local celebrity Honey G for this news item. The question we asked was ' what is thoughts about Honey G on X Factor?' the reason we asked this question for this news item is because the local citizens of Harrow Road are entitled to dispense their opinion on this entertainment on the X Factor.
Soundeffects:

Evidence of using freesound.org to get BGM SFX |
the image above is where I was told to gather soundeffects needed for our local news bulletin. For news item 1 we needed outside background noises such as car passing by with people talking in the background. The reason for this is because when we did our OB, the background noises at the back we sort of distorted and negatively affected the voxpops, therefore I was told by Alberto to look for a suitable background noise to fix the issue.

The script above is our first draft for news item 3 and thanks to the previous the news items; I been able to take out information more efficiently, and the information I have gathered must be short and also maintaining delivering the most important information. With this one, our group decided to do an interview of one of the eye-witnesses of the incident, this has enabled get to tap into their thoughts and opinions about the incident and also try to get a better picture of what really happened. With this, we can then start explaining to our audience in a simplified version.

The script above the finalised version of our script, we didn't do a second draft version as we believe it was suitable enough and concise because it had all the important fact that was we needed. We have used an an Outside Broadcast (OB) because it will allow us to give the audience further information about what the current status is now for Moammen's murdered who is a 19-year named Mussa Abid. By conducting an OB, it also indicate we have challenged the codes and convention of a real news bulletin because you don't really hear local news bulletin be on live on the area they are talking about.

evidence of using sync-lock tool |
the image above is the tool that our co-editor used to edit our news item 3 and it is called the ' sync-lock tool. The reason why we used this tool is because it allowed our co-editor to move the selected tracks at the same time. This is tool is useful as it makes the editing process more efficient and be convenient for our co-editor since he can move the tracks rather than moving them all one by one which will prolong the editing process.

The image above is where we got the idea of doing our news item 5 business. Whilst roaming around the streets of Harrow road we thought of a way on how to get news item without the use of secondary research from Harrow Times, therefore when we heard that there was a restaurant crowned on Harrow road from the locals we went there for ourselves to see if the restaurant was crowned "resturant of the year". After we comfirmed about their achievement, I then took it a bit further by using secondary research to understand how Bombay restuarant was able to achieve this award, therefore I can produce the correct script and pass on it for our script writer to finalise the draft.
TOOL:

evidence of using the equaliser tool. |
the image above is the tool that our co-editor used and this is called the 'equaliser tool'. The equaliser tool is used because it allows our co-editor to utilise sounds by frequency where you can increase the volume of some frequencies and reduce others. While our co-editor was editing news item 5, he used the equalisation effect when we interviewed the manager of Bombay Central. This was done therefore it seems like a telephone call with him by choosing a certain curve from the equalisation effect, which reduces a certain of volume within the frequency of the recording in order to sound like a telephone call.
